Une sorte d’autoroute vélo à double sens à été mise en place il y a quelques années sur l’axe boulevard Sébastopol-boulevard Strasbourg, pour améliorer la circulation des bus qui partageaient leur piste avec les deux-roues, mais aussi avec l’idée de donner la possibilité aux cyclistes de traverser sans trop de difficulté, rive droite, Paris du sud au nord, de la Seine à la gare de l’Est. Splendide.
En après-midi, il faut un peu prendre garde aux obstacles habituels, pouvant surgir ça et là, une fourgonnette, par exemple, souhaitant quitter le boulevard pour une ruelle transversale et qui, fatalement, doit couper l’autoroute vélo à deux pistes prioritaires mais exposées quand même, ou encore les carrefours et les passages piétons qui font le quotidien du cycliste urbain. Sinon, globalement, à ces heures-là, ça roule, sans qu’on soit ralenti par un bus qui lambine, ni qu’on se retrouve plaqué contre un trottoir par une taxi fou. Tout est bien, mais…
Mais… il faut venir voir comment les choses se passent dès 18h, à l’heure de pointe. C’est en effet l’heure de pointe pour tout le monde. Ce qui se passe au carrefour boulevard St Denis-boulevard de Strasbourg, là où les enseignes de Hamburger se font face sans vergogne, est spectaculaire. On parle véritablement de spectacle, qui divertira le curieux. Dès que le feu passe au vert pour les vélos transitant sur notre axe Sébastopol-Strasbourg, dans les deux sens, un peloton se met en marche. Parfois, si le rythme de progression peut rester élevé, le peloton s’étire en file indienne, mais lorsque le trafic est dense et que les cyclistes sont à cran, on observe des bancs excités de vélos dont on distingue, dans l’obscurité vespérale de l’automne, une fois l’heure d’hiver décrétée, les phares qui s’agitent, blancs dans un sens, rouges dans l’autre. Et tous les coups semblent permis, la guerre est déclarée à plusieurs niveaux, entre les vélos et les autos à chaque carrefour et à chaque sémaphore, entre les trottinettes et les vélos, entre les lents et les rapides… ça chauffe, on s’invective un peu, les passages en force succèdent aux coude-à coude.
Une ambulance s’annonce soudain tout girophare au bleu et toute sirène hurlante. Très lentement, poussivement, mais miraculeusement, elle se fraie un chemin dans le trafic engorgé, en direction de République. Elle s’éloigne et déjà le cirque reprend, dans un brouhaha total. Et les automobiles incontestablement surpassent le vélo, sur un point précis: leur klaxon déclasse la sonnette des bicyclettes. À 18 heures 30 boulevard de Strasbourg, quelques coups de sonnettes rageurs parviennent aux oreilles attentives d’un piéton innocent qui n’a rien demandé à personne; tandis que le klaxon de la 4×4 urbaine explose les tympans du même piéton qui, revanchard, se promet déjà de changer de statut.
Il serait divertissant que les fabricants de vélos généralisent en option standard la trombe à assistance électrique, un modèle qui gueule très fort, intégré au guidon, afin que la traversée sud-nord de Paris soit encore plus marrante.
